Organic certification is a certification process for producers of organic food and other organic agricultural products, including organic textiles made from organically grown fibers.
Organic systems are built on two main pillars: managing biological systems and avoiding synthetic chemicals. Generally, it involves a set of production standards that include avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives), irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge; avoidance of genetically modified seed; use of farmland that has been free from prohibited chemical inputs for a number of years; maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products and undergoing periodic on-site inspections.
Organic agriculture aims to preserve natural resources, support animal health and welfare, and avoid most synthetic materials. However, no one has ownership over the term organic. "While organic foods have fewer synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and are free of hormones and antibiotics, they don't appear to have a nutritional advantage over their conventional counterparts" (Harvard Health Letter, Sep 2015).
Organic clothing products are deemed to be safer as manufacturers adhere to very rigid and stricter manufacturing standards. This is not only to minimize negative impact to the environment but to ensure customer value as well by subscribing to very high ethical standards. There are no chemical retentions from organic cotton clothing, people with allergies or with specific chemical sensitivity may benefit from using organic cotton in clothing fabric.
